A FAST, SAFE AND EFFECTIVE RESPONSE TO EMERGENCIES
Biological emergency management with certified protocols
During the health emergency of 2020 NANOCOATINGS® developed a specific protocol for the management of biological emergencies, integrating professional aerosolisation systems, photocatalytic and antimicrobial technologies and broad-spectrum disinfectants. The experience gained in those years made it possible to develop a comprehensive system of intervention on air, surfaces and environments, aimed at reducing microbiological contamination and managing different types of biological risk.
NANOCOATINGS® has been operating for more than ten years in the field of nanotechnologies applied to disinfection, air purification and the functionalisation of surfaces. The activities are also developed through collaborations with specialised organisations and technical-scientific partners.
These include ALKEO LABS Srl, an organisation that has taken over and continues the technological experience developed by Medical Jet in the design and production of FELMAR® aerosolisers, professional systems for the controlled diffusion of aerosols and micro-aerosols for environmental sanitisation. FELMAR® technology has a long application history in hospital and healthcare settings as well. NANOCOATINGS® also collaborates with ARCOSOLUTIONS Srl, an academic spin-off of the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Trieste, recognised by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region with Decree no. 13/PROTUR of 09/01/2019 as a highly qualified body in the field of chemical analysis and odour assessment.
In the first phase, the protocol provides for the use of FELMAR® aerosolisers, capable of generating dry aerosols and micro-aerosols and of distributing specific disinfectant solutions evenly inside the environments to be treated.

These are only some of the pathogens on which the effectiveness of the disinfection protocol has been verified; the complete list of available tests can be provided on request.
The second phase of the protocol provides for the application of NANOCOATINGS® ZEROVOC VB PLUS, a treatment developed to give surfaces lasting antimicrobial properties and to complement the action of the initial disinfection. The product is formulated with a specific combination of titanium dioxide with high photocatalytic activity, silver and other functional components, designed to maintain the activity of the treatment both in the presence of natural or artificial light and in conditions of reduced or no lighting. Once applied, ZEROVOC VB PLUS anchors to the substrate without creating visible films or films that can be felt to the touch, and makes it possible to functionalise the surfaces most exposed to contact and daily use. The aim is to combine the disinfection of the environment with active protection of the surface, able to keep performing its function over time and to complement normal cleaning and sanitising procedures.
The alcohol-based solution allows quick and even application on numerous materials, subject to verification of compatibility with the substrate.

NANOCOATINGS® ZEROVOC VB PLUS was developed to give treated surfaces lasting antimicrobial properties. The formulation, based on titanium dioxide with high photocatalytic activity and silver, anchors firmly to the substrate without creating visible films or films that can be felt to the touch and can be applied to numerous materials, subject to verification of their compatibility. The antibacterial and antiviral activity of the treatment has been verified through specific laboratory tests, both on textile materials and on non-porous surfaces. The combination of the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide and the silver-based component also allows the treatment to perform its function both in the presence of light and in conditions of reduced or no lighting.
ZEROVOC VB PLUS is mainly applied to the surfaces most subject to contact and sharing, such as handles, telephones, keyboards, mice, push-button panels, remote controls, handrails, work equipment, break areas, seating, upholstery, taps and sanitary fittings. The treatment can also be used on specific components of fan coils and air-conditioning systems, subject to a technical assessment of the system. The choice of the surfaces to be treated is defined case by case according to the environment, the materials present, the frequency of use and the specific needs of the customer. The duration of the functionalisation can reach about 12 months, depending on the substrate, wear, mechanical stress and the cleaning procedures to which the surface is subjected.
To maintain surfaces not functionalised with ZEROVOC VB PLUS, Rely+On® Virkon® can be used, a Medical-Surgical Device registered under no. 16765 of the Italian Ministry of Health, following the concentrations, contact times and application methods provided by the manufacturer. The product has efficacy tests according to EN 14476 for virucidal activity, EN 1276 and EN 13697 for bactericidal activity and EN 1650 and EN 13697 for fungicidal and yeasticidal activity, as well as efficacy data against numerous pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2.
The NANOCOATINGS® protocol therefore integrates two different levels of intervention: environmental disinfection through professional FELMAR® aerosolisation and the subsequent functionalisation of the most exposed surfaces with ZEROVOC VB PLUS, with the aim of adding longer-lasting antimicrobial protection to the disinfection.
The main advantages of the protocol are:
- Thorough distribution of the disinfectant through aerosols and micro-aerosols generated by FELMAR® equipment, able to reach the environment and the exposed surfaces evenly.
- Combined treatment of air and surfaces thanks to the controlled diffusion of the disinfectant solution inside the environment.
- Use of Rely+On® Virkon®, Medical-Surgical Device no. 16765 of the Italian Ministry of Health, with virucidal, bactericidal and fungicidal activity documented according to specific European standards.
- Aerosolisation with a low liquid input, designed to distribute controlled quantities of solution and limit the deposit of moisture on surfaces.
- Possibility of treating complex environments, including those with furniture, fabrics, documents and equipment, subject to assessment of the compatibility of materials and of the application protocol.
- Integration with ZEROVOC VB PLUS, a photocatalytic, antibacterial and antiviral treatment that functionalises surfaces and can maintain its performance for up to about 12 months, depending on use and wear.
- Reduced need for repeated interventions on functionalised surfaces, complementing normal cleaning and disinfection procedures.
- More than ten years of experience gained by NANOCOATINGS® in applying technologies for disinfection, surface functionalisation and air treatment.
